The Right Intelligence in the Right Place: The New Frontier of Industrial Performance

For decades, industrial performance was a battle over time: eliminate waste, smooth the flows, cut downtime. That battle still matters. But another frontier has opened, quieter and just as costly: misplaced intelligence.

Waste has changed in nature

Many organisations deploy technology where the need isn’t, and neglect intelligence where it would truly create value. You automate a task that’s already rare, you tool up a department that didn’t need it, while next door a daily pain point keeps wearing the teams down. The problem is no longer a lack of tools: it’s their allocation. That’s the new waste, and it shows up on no OEE indicator.

Five intelligences to orchestrate

The right answer is never “more AI.” It’s the right intelligence in the right place: human, artificial, data, embedded or operational. None is enough on its own; it’s their orchestration that produces a lasting result. Artificial intelligence amplifies, it doesn’t replace the judgement of the people who know the floor. A model that isn’t plugged into reliable data and a human decision produces nothing but a demo.

Start from the need, not the tool

Effective transformations don’t start with a technology, but with a real pain point and a decidable use case. You identify, you prioritise by value and feasibility, then you choose with discernment, not by technological default. It’s less spectacular than a big project, and far more profitable. And sometimes the right intelligence in the right place is to use no AI at all: to first fix an organisational or data problem that technology would only make worse.

What it asks of a leader

Putting the right intelligence in the right place is a matter of arbitration, not purchasing. You have to be willing to say no to seductive demos, to start small, and to measure before you scale. That’s exactly what separates a site that “does AI” from a site that gets value out of it.

Tomorrow’s performance won’t be decided by the amount of AI deployed, but by how accurately each form of intelligence is placed. That’s where the new frontier is won.
