Regulatory dossiers: tipping the 80/20 with AI, within the GMP framework

In fine chemicals, pharma or food, a large share of expert time goes not into analysis, but into formatting: drafting a dossier, re-laying out a protocol, folding amendments back in, finding the right paragraph in a work instruction. That’s exactly where AI makes a difference, provided you set clear limits.

Flipping the substance / form ratio

On a regulatory dossier, the classic ratio is lopsided: many hours on form, few on reasoning. AI can absorb much of the formatting (pre-drafting a document from existing material, structuring a protocol, harmonizing a set of pieces) to give expert time back to what really matters: the substance. The goal isn’t to go faster for its own sake, it’s to put human intelligence back where it has value.

Documentary consistency: spotting contradictions

Another concrete use: having AI review a body of documents to detect inconsistencies, such as an amendment that contradicts the parent procedure, an instruction never updated after a deviation. A human wouldn’t have time to cross-check everything; AI roughs it out and flags, the expert decides.

The GMP framework is not negotiable

Let’s say it plainly: AI does not release a batch and does not decide on compliance. Ever. It prepares, it proposes, it formats; the decision that carries your regulatory responsibility stays human, validated and traced. Data security isn’t a detail either: in a GMP environment, the office and automation networks are separated for good reasons, and a quickly built prototype isn’t a production tool until it’s hosted and protected properly. We work within the framework, not alongside it.

Start small, on a controlled scope

The right entry point is one document type, on a scope your experts master perfectly, so they judge the quality of what the AI produces immediately and keep control. You expand later, once trust is established and the safeguard is proven.
